Sustainability

A view of the wind turbine at Luther College.

As a leader in college campus environmentalism, Luther has made some serious commitments to renewable energy.

Solar Arrays

In 2013, Luther completed installation of what was then the largest solar array in Iowa. This brings the college's total solar array count to three. Solar energy completely powers two facilities that house more than 120 undergraduates.

Wind Turbine

The Luther College wind turbine, built in 2011, harnesses a second renewable energy source and supplies a third of Luther's power, dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enabling the campus to shrink its carbon footprint and work toward a goal of carbon neutrality and other sustainability objectives.

Quick Facts

  • Luther College's wind turbine hit the 10 million kilowatt hours landmark in mid-June 2014 after starting to generate power in October 2011.
  • On average, the wind turbine produces 30% of the electrons used on campus.
