Rankings proliferate—whether they apply to sports, politics, or even colleges and universities.

Arguably the best-known compiler of rankings is the survey published by U.S. News and World Report. The journal ranks all participating schools in seven separate areas (note that hundreds of schools are not ranked by the survey).

Note: Keep in mind that nationally published rankings don’t tell the full story. In fact, several studies have shown the U.S. News and World Report rankings correlate quite highly with just two institutional variables: the size of an institution’s financial endowment and the selectivity of its student population. But, most noticeably missing from any college and university ranking list is information about the quality of teaching and learning—which is central to the mission of liberal arts schools.
