Maggie Britton (’10) returned to the Luther College Music Department as an adjunct instructor in music theory and ear training in 2012. She completed her M.M. in Music Theory from the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned the “Outstanding Master’s Report Award" for her thesis entitled: “‘A Thousand Nuances of Movement’: The Intersection of Gesture, Narrative, and Temporality in Selected Mazurkas of Chopin.” In November of 2012, Maggie presented a related paper entitled “Four Gestural Types in Chopin’s Mazurka in C# minor, Op. 50, no. 3” at the joint national meeting of the American Musicological Society, the Society for Ethnomusicology, and the Society for Music Theory in New Orleans, LA. She has also presented at Luther’s faculty research symposium. Her research interests include the music of Polish composers (especially Fryderyk Chopin and Henryk Górecki), gesture, narrative, musical meaning, and the analysis of choral music. 

Maggie has taught nearly every course in the core music theory and ear training curriculum at Luther over the past nine years, and this fall 2020 semester she will be adding another course, MUS 110 Musicianship Workshop, to her repertoire. Maggie is trained as a pianist and singer and is a self-taught acoustic guitarist.

Maggie lives in Decorah with her husband, Jason, and their two young sons. When she isn’t teaching, she can be found knee-deep in toys and art projects, exploring the outdoors, or sewing clothes for her boys.
