John West Carrington, 1986

Winter 2022 (February 14, 2022)

John West Carrington went to be with his loving Savior on Oct. 11, 2021, after bravely fighting Corticobasal Syndrome (CBS), a rare progressive neurological disease. He was 56 years old. John was a devout Catholic who battled his illness with unwavering faith and grace, never once complaining or asking “Why me?”

John had many “super powers,” among them an ability to use his creative and imaginative spirit to turn any mundane situation into something fun and memorable. He also made everyone around him feel special and cared for, whether his encounter with them was a brief one-time situation or a lifelong friendship. John had a true love for living life to its fullest and it was infectious to those around him.

John was a modern-day Renaissance man: a Dallas Cowboys fan, an avid reader, gardener and cook, and a talented woodworker, building a play structure and bookshelves for his three children. He also loved the opera and enjoying a glass of wine while discussing the events of the day with his wife or friends. He was also an active member of St. Rita Catholic Church in Alexandria, Va., where he deepened his life of faith and developed many wonderful friendships.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 15 years, Gabrielle, and their three beautiful children, Madeleine (12), Nora (10), Jack (7), and their dog, Thumos. He was the beloved son of parents John and Maridean Carrington, and dearest brother to his three sisters, Pamela (Carrington) Rotto ‘84 , Rochelle Carrington ‘91, and Kristina (Carrington) Larson ‘95. He also had a loving extended family.

John made a lasting impact on this world through his bravery, his sense of humor, his unwavering faith, and his empathy. We were the lucky ones to call him husband, dad, son, brother, and friend, and we miss him immensely.

His family and friends celebrated John’s life on Oct. 20 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (Parish Center), located at 830 23rd St S, Arlington, VA 22202.
