Resources

The Center for Intercultural Engagement and Student Success provides services and assistance for U.S. minority and international students at Luther, and offers educational programming and events for all Luther students. The Center works to promote a greater appreciation and a deeper understanding of the diverse individuals and groups that make up our campus, strengthen access to multicultural perspectives within the tradition of a liberal arts education, and advocate for policies that safeguard the inclusion and participation of all members of the community.

The Council for Equity and Inclusion is a standing committee of the college composed of faculty, administrators, and student senators, representing every academic division of the college, the office of human resources, and the Center for Intercultural Engagement and Student Success. The Council acts as the main campus voice on issues of diversity, including the status of women and other historically underrepresented groups; advises and supports campus diversity programming, training, and faculty and staff development;  supports and assists the staff of the Diversity Center; and serves as an outreach resource to the Decorah community. Co-chairs are Professors Marie Drews and Professor Mark Eichinger.

The Identity Studies major combines the four disciplines of Women and Gender Studies, Africana Studies, Dance, and Asian Studies into one major and minor and looks at how people have shaped their own identity. Understanding identity helps empower students to confront various kinds of systems of oppression. Studying these perspectives helps Identity Studies students in their vocations and professions.

The Women and Gender Equality Center has the mission of supporting women interested in bettering themselves and the world around them. The Center works to provide a safe environment for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Working in partnership with the Center for Intercultural Engagement and Student Success, Global Concerns groups, Student Life and the Women and Gender Studies Program, the Women and Gender Equality Center supports the work of students and faculty in exploring the connections between gender, peace and justice. The Center can be found in Gjerset House, two doors down from the Center for the Arts.

The Music Department Antiracism Task Force consists of faculty, staff, and students who meet weekly to study the intersection of racism and music. Based on their work of listening to the community and studying the issues, they develop policy recommendations for the music faculty. The task force is focused on the following issues: recruitment pathways and barriers to recruitment, participation, and retention of prospective BIPOC students in the music department; and Eurocentric focus in the music program curriculum.
