Consider Your Options

Students wishing to study off campus have several options:

• Programs that Luther sponsors (such as the Nottingham, Malta, Münster, and Italy programs or the 20-25 faculty-led J-Term programs offered each year)
• Programs offered as Luther consortium and exchange programs (such as ACM/Associated Colleges of the Midwest, Washington Semester, and University of South-Eastern Norway)
• Programs offered through Luther affiliated/associated program providers (such as the Institute for the International Education of Students, Institute for Study Abroad-Butler University, DIS, and CIEE)
• Programs offered through other U.S. colleges/universities
• Direct enrollment at selected universities.

Students also have options with respect to the length of their off-campus studies. Students may study off campus for:

• An academic year
• A semester
• A J-Term
• A summer
• A combination of a semester and terms

Regardless of the program type, location, or duration of study, students are subject to Luther off-campus program policies, as well as the policies of the specific programs to which they apply.

Please note that application deadlines vary. Luther's internal deadlines may be different than those listed in program materials or websites of various program providers. Students should consult with the Luther Center for Global Learning before applying to a program.

Consider the Type of Instruction

Semester and academic year programs offer a variety of instruction. On the Luther Nottingham academic year program, Luther Malta and the Mediterranean spring semester program, Luther Münster spring semester program, and Luther Coldigioco, Italy fall semester program, students are accompanied by a Luther faculty member and travel and study with other Luther students. Instruction is also provided by in-country faculty lecturers and/or through courses taught at the local university, depending on the program.

Students who participate in the LCCC/Lutheran Colleges China Consortium semester program, the JASIN-Japan Studies in Nagasaki semester program, or the University of South-Eastern Norway and Volda University College semester programs in Norway study with other U.S. college students at local universities and may or may not be accompanied by a Luther college faculty director.

Visit the Center for Global Learning

Perhaps one of the best places to start is to visit the Center for Global Learning. While in the Center, students can:

• Talk with the Center for Global Learning Intern to begin exploring your options. The Intern is available on a walk-in basis or by appointment.
• Meet with an Off-Campus Programs Advisor to start thinking about programs, how particular programs meet your academic goals, and the cost implications of off-campus study.
