Writing Center

The Nancy K. Barry Writing Center is a resource available to all Luther students who seek assistance in writing. It is located on the main level of Preus Library under the sign "Writing Help."

At the Writing Center, we believe that all writers benefit from collaboration. We engage writers in dialogue about their process of writing as well as the writing itself. We ask questions to prompt self-reflection, critical thinking, and inquiry. We also brainstorm with a writer, offer advice or suggestions, and model strategies for planning, drafting, and revising.

In addition to working on their writing, we help students to develop as writers. We help them learn to understand assignments, identify brainstorming strategies, understand specific genres of writing, articulate and meet goals for their writing, and develop self-editing techniques.

Peer tutors work in one-on-one sessions to help students with the following:

  • Paper assignments in all subject areas or courses
  • Presentation notes
  • Technical writing such as lab reports
  • Essay exam preparation
  • Senior projects
  • Scholarship or internship applications
  • Personal statements and letters for graduate and professional schools
  • Creative writing
  • Planning and organizing any of these projects: we will help at any stage in the writing process!

To make an appointment with a writing tutor, please go to the Writing Center's scheduling website. Walk-ins are welcome, but  priority will be given to students with scheduled appointments.
