The Basics

Work study positions are offered to virtually every student who applies for one. The majority of our on-campus work study positions are actually funded by Luther.

• Eligibility: As long as you’re legally eligible to work in the United States, you can participate in work study, either through the federally funded work study program or in a Luther-funded position.
• Work Hours: Typically, students are allowed to work an average of six to ten hours a week to allow time for studies and involvement in other campus activities.
• Payment: Students can decide if pay earned through work study can be applied to tuition or alternatively used for other personal expenses. Payroll is processed the second week of each month.

First-Year Students

As a first-year student, if you file a FAFSA, you'll receive a financial aid award that provides an opportunity for a work study position. If you choose not to file a FAFSA and are interested in work study, please contact us and we will include a work study opportunity in your financial aid award. Generally students are assigned work study positions in dining services, facilities, or grounds. However, positions for are also available in a variety of other areas such as Communications and Marketing, Library and Information Systems, and various academic departments on campus.

All incoming students are assigned to a work study position. This assists in connecting incoming students with a work-study job while they are transitioning to campus. Incoming students will receive an email with their assigned work study position by mid-July. These entry level positions pay $1.00 more per hour that all other entry level positions.

Incoming students are welcome to explore all work-study positions. To see all open positions log into Handshake (an online job board for Luther work-study positions) and search "Luther College". This tutorial will assist you in logging in and navigating Handshake.

Returning Students

There are numerous routes to explore for discovering work study positions on campus. Generally, the first step is to ask your advisor if they know of any work study positions available in your related academic departments. Administrative assistants of offices on campus are also great resources to check with on current work study positions.

Finding the Right Job

There are many on-campus job opportunities. For instance, if you're interested in:

• sports–you might find a job assisting recruiters, officiating intramurals, managing a team, or supervising the climbing wall or ropes course.
• computers or programming–you might work in tech support or with Luther’s Web Content Bureau.
• the environment–you may want to consider working with the campus gardeners or as part of Luther’s recycling and waste-reduction programs.
• academics–you may want to work as a research assistant or tutor within your major or minor.
• media–you could take photographs for Luther’s Visual Media Department, DJ a show on campus station KWLC, or write a blog for Luther’s Admissions Department.

These are just a few examples of the many areas in which Luther students work on campus.

Students with federal work-study funding also have the option of off-campus jobs, such as tutoring at an area school or daycare, helping to harvest and cross-pollinate at Seed Savers Exchange, assisting at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, working in the gallery at Decorah’s Art Haus, and many other positions.
