Academics at Luther

Luther offers over 60 majors, minors and pre-professional programs. Our rigorous and engaging liberal arts curriculum provides plenty of opportunity for you to study a number of different subjects. In fact, we encourage it!

Dedicated Faculty

You'll find that our top-notch professors are dedicated to teaching and truly care about their students. And our low student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1 ensures small class sizes. (At Luther you're not a number!) Teachers at Luther promote an “open door” culture, which makes them accessible to students—in fact, 95 percent of faculty choose to live within five miles of campus.

A Liberal Arts College

As a liberal arts college, Luther encourages an approach to learning that makes connections between subjects and also connects individual learning to the larger world. In this spirit, you will engage in an education beyond the classroom walls—through collaborative research with professors, study-away programs, and prestigious internships, to name just a few examples.

Paideia: A Unique Academic Experience

Integral to a Luther education is our signature Paideia program. Paideia is an interdisciplinary course series that strengthens community through shared academic experience. First-year students in the Paideia program share a common reading list and attend performances, events, and an annual lecture series together. The Paideia tradition continues for upperclass students with a course that focuses on ethics and values in the context of a specific major.

Support for All Students

As a student at Luther, you have access to a variety of services to support you throughout your college career. A few of these are:

  • Library Liaisons: Every academic department and program has a designated expert librarian to assist students with research projects.
  • Writing Center: Writing tutors are available to assist all students with writing assignments. Located on the main level of Preus Library.
  • Center for Academic Enrichment (CAE): Provides everything from tutoring to academic coaching to disability services.
  • TRIO Achievement Program: (Formerly SSS). A federally-funded program designed to ensure academic success for Luther College students who qualify.

Academic Honors

At Luther, the journey of education is a communal one, and the supportive learning community on campus consistently produces Fulbright scholars and other nationally competitive award winners. Luther College is also a Phi Beta Kappa institution, a distinction belonging to only 10 percent of higher-learning institutions nationwide. Luther also offer a distinctive Scholars program.
