Deepen your understanding of the world.

The Luther College History Department fully supports the statement on the History of Racist Violence in the United States issued by the American Historical Association early in June 2020. We encourage students who wish to understand better the history of racist violence in not only the United States but elsewhere in the world to register for and to demand more courses in history. Only through a more informed understanding of our past will we be able to work toward a more equitable and inclusive society and culture.

Why Study History at Luther?

History is a cornerstone of the liberal arts. When we study history, we learn about ourselves in the lives of others. Understanding who we are as individuals and placing ourselves within the context in which we live is crucial to a fulfilling life.

History is in everything. No matter what career path you are thinking of pursuing, the study of history will help you think more broadly about the world and better understand its complexities.

History matters. In a world increasingly fueled by sound-bites, a knowledge of history is imperative for informed, responsible citizenship.
