Re: Sexual Assault Campus Climate Survey

Dear members of the Luther community,

Last spring, Luther College conducted a Sexual Assault Campus Climate Survey to assess the issue of safety and sexual assault on our campus. Of the 30 percent of Luther students who completed the survey, 14 percent of women and 3 percent of men reported having experienced sexual assault since starting at Luther. 

These are our classmates, students, friends, roommates, and members of our clubs, ensembles and athletic teams. At Luther we value safety, trust and the ability to live without fear of harm–sexual violence violates all of these values. Any incident is one incident too many. 

A summary of the survey results and an FAQ document are accessible below. In addition, I invite you to be part of campus conversations on Wednesday, Nov. 15, to understand our survey results and work together to create an environment that is intolerant of sexual violence. I have asked Matt Bills, Title IX coordinator, and Corey Landstrom, vice president and dean for student life, to present the findings and facilitate the discussion. The town hall meeting will be held in Olin 102, from 7-8:30 p.m. 

This important work is best completed with the direct involvement of our community members. I hope that you can be part of the solution that leads to creating a safer environment. I know that both individuals and the community are negatively affected anytime there is an act of sexual violence. The results of the survey help to illuminate where our efforts are strong and where we can improve. 

Several departments are working collaboratively to provide access to resources, clarity in reporting process and prevention efforts. Student organizations and classes are also addressing sexual violence. All of your work is deeply appreciated. We will continue to review and revise our policies, processes and resources to ensure students have access to a fair and timely process.
