Summer Dance Workshops

All classes take place at the Center for the Arts in Studio One on the Luther College Campus.

A unique opportunity to experience a supportive, non-competitive learning environment while training dancers as artists through injury-free and versatile experiences.

Movement Fundamentals is a training paradigm that empowers dancers to become artists and people to love and feel gratitude for their bodies. Developed by Professor of Dance, Jane Hawley over the last 25 years, Luther’s dance program engages all ages and abilities in the agency of creating movement and crafting expression. Please join us to celebrate thinking through the body while moving through various genres of dance styles and expressions.

Somatic Practice is observing oneself through the lived body by moving and sensing.

Somatic Practices are a process of doing and being -- a living process by which our bodily sensations, movements, perceptions, emotions, and thoughts form a whole of experience.  

Choreography is the art or practice of designing a sequence of movements and steps for dance.

Ballet is a type of performance dance that originated during the Italian Renaissance in the fifteenth century and later developed into a concert dance form in France and Russia. It has since become a widespread, highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary based on French terminology.

Hip Hop is a genre of dance that refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking which was created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. Hip hop music, also called hip-hop or rap music, is a music genre developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans in the late 1970s which consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted.

Lyrical is a dance style that embodies various aspects of ballet, jazz, acrobatics, modern, and hip hop, while still maintaining its autonomy. Usually choreographed to pop music and using the lyrics to determine the intention of the movement, steps, and expression of the choreography.

Contemporary is a genre of dance performance that developed during the mid twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe.

Contact Improvisation is a form of improvised dancing created by Steve Paxton, that has been developing internationally since 1972. It involves the exploration of one's body in relationship to others by using the fundamentals of sharing weight, touch, momentum, gravity, inertia, and movement awareness.

What to Wear/Bring

Please be sure to bring a water bottle and layered clothing for keeping comfortable with changing body temperature. Also, please wear any clothing that feels best to you and that offers freedom for moving.

Socks are welcomed in the barefoot studio.

Cost

Cost for the Teen or Pre-Teen Workshop is $385/week.
