Courses and Requirements

Students who major in neuroscience cannot earn a minor in biology or psychology.

The neuroscience major requires completion of the following core courses:

  • BIO 151 (Principles of Biology)
  • BIO 152 (Principles of Biology)
  • BIO 255 (Human Physiology)
  • BIO 254 (Experimental Neuroscience)
  • BIO 362 (Neuroscience)
  • PSYC 130 (General Psychology)
  • PSYC 249 (Brain and Behavior)
  • BIO 256 or PSYC 350 (Statistics)
  • Capstone Seminar (2 credit seminar)
  • Senior Paper

In addition to the core courses, students must complete 16 hours in correlative courses from the following concentrations, with at least 4 hours from each category:

Category 1

  • BIO 201 (Genetics)
  • BIO 363 (Molecular Biology)
  • BIO 364 (Cell Biology)
  • BIO 367 (Endocrinology)
  • CHEM 301 (Biochemistry)
  • CS 150 (Introduction to Computer Science)

Category 2

  • PHIL 330 (Philosophy of Mind)
  • PSYC 244 (Animal Cognition)
  • PSYC 352 (Cognitive Processes)
  • PSYC 354 (Learning and Behavior)
  • PSYC 465 (Abnormal Psychology)

The total course number of courses for the major is 13, plus completion of the institution’s senior paper requirement. It should be noted that some of the correlative courses have additional pre-requisites that are not met by the core courses, so in some cases additional coursework may be needed. Finally, for students wishing to continue in graduate study it is strongly advised that they complete Math 140 or 151 and Chemistry 151 and 152 or 201.
