Why Study Musical Theatre?

Students perform in "Rent" by Jonathan Larson in Fall of 2017.

"I have found Luther's program to be daring and willing to make changes based on how the actors are feeling. I felt like my voice was being heard and my needs were taken care of. I love working with the professors and with all the talented students. It's really an experience that you won't get anywhere else."

Why Study Musical Theatre?

The Musical Theatre minor is intended for students of any major interested in studying the intersections of dance, music and theatre.  The minor emphasizes the performer as creator by providing a broad foundation through performance-related course work and the study of the art form in context to its historical underpinnings and current trends in musical theatre.

Our Musical Theatre program resides within the Visual and Performing Arts Department, which allows students to explore many aspects of the arts. Our program also works collaboratively with the Music Department, guaranteeing students diverse training with faculty members.

Musical Theatre faculty and staff come from different backgrounds and unique training, providing students with the diverse knowledge they need to thrive. Our dedicated faculty create relationships with students and support them well after graduation.

A Growing Program

The Musical Theatre minor is growing as a program. In the past, Luther has done a musical every two years and a cabaret in the spring. Now, there are at least two musical theatre productions every year. Students of all backrounds are encouraged to audition.

Strong Foundations

Musical Theatre minors are required to take courses that expand their repertoire and understanding of musical theatre. They are required to take musical theatre history courses, private voice lessions, dance courses, and acting courses. View the full course requirements.
