An Unexpectedly Practical Combination

I took German for four years during high school, and before coming to college, I spent a year abroad in Germany. Once at Luther, I knew that I wanted to continue studying German.

A degree in German provides more opportunities than most people might think. Germany has one of the largest economies in Europe and strong ties to the U.S., so a degree in German can be very appealing to businesses. Even if you don't intend to use the language after graduation, a language degree still catches the eyes of employers because it shows commitment and adaptability.

I have always had an interest in a business-oriented degree because of the variety of possibilities it gives you. I plan to pursue a career in international business and work for a company that has ties to Germany, where I could use my language skills.

Unique Study Abroad Opportunities

I had an excellent experience studying abroad in Germany on Luther's Münster Semester program. During the semester, students immerse themselves in the German culture while living with a host family. Students also take classes from Luther College professors, which helps satisfy all-college requirements. If it were not for this program, I would not have had the time to study abroad while double majoring.

Thriving in a Liberal Arts Environment

After taking a class with more than 300 students at Iowa State during my senior year of high school, I realized I needed to attend an institution with smaller class sizes. I knew that would make it easier to develop closer relationships with my classmates and professors. My professors at Luther go out of their way to get to know students and make sure they feel comfortable with the material. All of Luther’s professors are passionate about what they do.

The Luther community makes me feel more comfortable and at home than any of the other schools I considered. It’s easy to establish relationships with other students here, and because of the size of campus, it's common to run into friends between classes. No matter where you are on campus, there's always someone to talk to.

Extracurricular Leadership

I am one of the captains of LUFDA, which is one of the men's Ultimate Frisbee teams. Ultimate Frisbee has definitely been central to my college experience. The community has welcomed me since my first day on campus and has been a great group for me to be a part of. I don't know what I would do without it.
