Art History Minor

Luther art history students have many opportunities to visit galleries at Luther

Art history emphasizes the analysis and contextualization of images and objects. It utilizes strategies from diverse fields such as history, psychology, physics, and cultural studies.

Although allied, the discipline of art history is distinct from studio art. In studio classes students engage in the making of art. Students in art history classes engage in the study and research of art made by others.

A study abroad experience is recommended for students interested in graduate work in art history. Past students have participated in the Luther College Nottingham Program or Luther’s Malta Program. Students should also consider pursuing language study beyond the 201 level.

A total of six courses are required for the art history minor. A majority of the courses are in the art history program. Other courses from related disciplines are also included.
