"No other time will your main focus be to just learn, grow, and—quite honestly—hang out. Try to make time for memory-making in college—those are the memories that will stick with you most later on."

Study Abroad Trips Top the List

Bailey took two J-Term courses abroad during her time at Luther. The first to Italy and France to study art history. With the second course, she studied theatre in England where they saw a different play every day—from flashy musicals to raw, modern shows in tiny rooms above pubs.

“To be immersed in a new culture with curious, like-minded people was in and of itself a great experience. But to be able to see, do, and learn new things while surrounded by the interesting context provided by a professor was just so cool to me,” Bailey says. “I would go back to Luther all over again to do more study abroad trips.”

Good Preparation for Her Career

Bailey was interested in pursuing publishing as a career so she felt it was important to get relevant experience at college. “I worked as a section editor for Luther CHIPS and the student-run art department magazine, ArtScan,” Bailey says. “During my senior year, I sought out an editorial internship with the editor-in-chief of the local Decorah magazine, Inspire(d). A couple weeks before graduating I accepted a job as an editor of a small hobby magazine.” There she managed the production and design of a monthly magazine while also gaining experience working in a studio and managing online video content.

“A few years later, I took a job as a web content coordinator for TN Marketing,” she says. “Since then I’ve been promoted to a digital content strategist position in charge of content management for 12 online streaming websites.”

Learned How to Think Critically and Ask Questions

“Apart from serving as a platform to gain relevant, credible experience that led me to find a dream job, Luther taught me how to think critically and ask questions,” Bailey says.

Bailey felt she learned how to develop and present her own ideas while listening to and building upon others’. “It gave me the confidence to speak up, something that has stayed with me into my career,” she says. “The many writing assignments also taught me a lot about self-editing and clarity in writing, which again is a valuable skill for any career path.”

Co-curriculars

Luther CHIPS newspaper (Features section editor), ArtScan (student-run art department magazine), editorial internship with Inspire(d) (local Decorah magazine), Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society), and Habitat for Humanity.

Advice for First-Year Students

"It can be tempting to load up your schedule with tons of activities. While it’s important to get involved and try new things in college, it’s also important to stop and savor this wonderful period of your life. No other time will your main focus be to just learn, grow, and—quite honestly—hang out. Try to make time for memory-making in college—those are the memories that will stick with you most later on.
