• Anna (Looft) Fett, Doctoral Program Student

"What I’ve appreciated most about my time at Luther is my relationship with my professors. They’ve inspired and mentored me, and still encourage me, even today, to pursue my vocational aspirations."

How She Found Her Major

“I initially came to Luther thinking I would become a math major,” says Anna, “but when I took my second required religion course (Religion in America), I found that I absolutely loved it. I was not only inspired, but challenged and riled up. I began to see the intersections of religion and politics in American history for the first time. That course is what really inspired me to become a religion major.”

What’s Next After Harvard

Since graduating from Luther, Anna earned a master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School. “I’m currently applying to doctoral programs and find it’s pretty competitive.” she says. “Until I’m accepted, I’m working in Boston as a Christian faith advisor for a group called ‘Kids4Peace’. The group educates and inspires Christian, Muslim, and Jewish youth from Boston and the Jerusalem area to be interfaith peace leaders.”

Aiming to be a Professor

“My goal is to become a college professor,” says Anna. “While at Luther, I worked for my religion professor, Karla Suomala, as her research assistant. In that position, I learned a great deal more about the art of researching while she worked on writing a book. It was exciting to get an insider’s view into the life of a professor and to think about what it will take to get me to that level.”

I’m a third generation Luther alumna. It’s really awesome because every homecoming I return to Luther with my husband, parents and all of my grandparents. I love that we all share that experience together.
