Valuable Skills Learned Through Work Study

As a student, Matt served as staff editor, sports editor, and editor of Luther Chips. “My work there really helped me learn the technical aspects of writing that I apply to my current job,” he says, “It also required me to work hard and focus since I needed to manage my homework at the same time.”

Matt’s current role as editor involves overseeing all editorial content for the paper, which gets delivered to all homes and businesses in Northbrook, Ill.

Small Class Sizes Have Big Impact

Matt feels that his senior seminar and study abroad experiences had the biggest effect on him at Luther. “Small class sizes made in-depth discussions about context we were studying possible,” says Matt. He also loved his J-term course in the Virgin Islands. “We spent 11 days sailing on a two-masted schooner and discussing sea-related literature for one hour each day. The rest of the day was spent on sea-related activities like learning the elements of seamanship and navigation, and how to sail a small craft.”

Practical Advice for First-Year Students

Matt knows that college is an ideal time for students to explore their interests. “You’re surrounded by people your own age and you have very few responsibilities,” he says. “But don’t forget that you still need to go to class and do your homework. After that, have fun.”
