Orchestral Auditions
General information for ALL students with interest in orchestra:
Audition schedule sign-ups will be posted on the Orchestra Room door - audition dates are below:
- Orchestra placement auditions for string players will take place from Tuesday, August 30-Thursday, September 1.
- Orchestra placement auditions for winds, brass, and percussion players will take place Tuesday, August 30-Thursday, September 1.
Full rehearsals will begin the week of September 5.
Information for string players:
- Download the info letter for first-year string players.
- Download audition excerpts for: Violin, Viola, Cello, Harp, and Double Bass.
- Special note for first-year string players and transfer students: All first-year and transfer string players should plan to attend an important informational meeting during orientation days. This meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 29, 4:30-5 PM in the Jenson-Noble Orchestra Room.
String players who plan to audition for Symphony Orchestra should prepare one minute of a solo piece in addition to orchestral excerpts.
String players who plan to audition for Philharmonia should simply prepare a solo of your choice, 3-4 minutes in length. No excerpts required for Philharmonia.
Information for winds, brass, and percussion players:
- Download the info letter for first-year winds, brass, and percussion players.
- Download audition excerpts for: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Trumpet, Horn, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Tuba, and Percussion.
Wind, brass, and percussion players who plan to audition for Symphony Orchestra and/or Chamber Orchestra should prepare the audition excerpts. No other music is required for the audition--no solo, no sight reading. Just excerpts.
2023 Luther College Symphony Orchestra Vienna Residency:
Every four years, the Luther College Symphony Orchestra travels to Vienna, Austria for twenty-five days of music-making, study, sightseeing, museums, great music, great architecture, history, learning, and fun. This January 2023 trip will be your only opportunity to see Vienna with the Luther College Symphony during your college career. We will not return to Vienna until January 2027.
